The freestanding structure in the building's core creates a semipublic environment for shared facilities, interaction, and networking between occupants. Circulation within the building occurs between these elements and the perimeter offices on balconies that are open to the sky above. These internal streets allow occupants to quickly survey each other and all of the varied activities occurring throughout the interior. In order to encourage as much social interaction as possible, the balconies contain social devices such as photocopiers, vending machines, game tables, snack counters, and galleys. The building sits on a plinth that serves as a parking garage and maintains the street wall at the pedestrian level. The facade strives to be simultaneously mute - resisting any sort of deliberate gesture - and accommodating to the individual by allowing floor-to-ceiling windows to open. This fenestration system also allows for the natural convection of air.
