It covers up the increased levels of noise in large spaces while adding a layer of sensory engagement to an otherwise blank architecture. Muzak has a rich and symbiotic connection with architecture. Choosing anything other than an architectural strategy as the base element of Muzak's identity will weaken the strength of this connection. High modern design is Muzak's only antidote to lingering associations with kitsch. Without it, Muzak is just another layer of theming and entertainment.
